Sloppy won't hurt anything since this will all be under the pickguard, just don't go crazy. Try to get as close to the outline as you can. Once you have both humbucker routes outlines, carefully route out the bits inside that outline. Use the existing single coil routes to help you line it up. Tape down the humbucker template print out. Snip that closest to whatever it is soldered to on the electronics. Pickguard (you should be able to remove it in its entirety except for the ground wire to the bridge.
Strip everything you can off of the guitar. Get a straight router bit.įind a picture of a humbucker template. Harbor Freight sells acceptable trim routers for $25. Single-coil-sized-humbuckers, while nice aren't humbuckers. You wanna learn to mod or you just want a finished product? This is definitely possible, but involves a lot more work.
The second option would be to actually route the body cavities out large enough to put full sized humbuckers in it. Most after market pickup manufacturers have several options available like this.
First, would be to simply replace the stock single coil pups with some humbuckers that are designed to fit in single coil guitars. If it is only routed for single coils then you have two options. If so then you would just need to adjust the pickguard or get a replacement that is cut for humbuckers. (I just put in some Fender Vintage Noiseless pups the other day, hence how I found that).
I had a single coil MIM strat that once I removed the pickguard I found out that the body cavities actually are large enough to put humbuckers in there if I wanted to, and I just found out that my American Special Tele has a the neck pup cavity that would be large enough for a P90 at least and possibly a full size humbucker if I wanted to. It is possible that the body may actually be routed with spaces large enough to put in humbuckers. First thing to do would be to take off the pickguard and check the routing in the body.
